Chapter 13

Kane

“Kane, Christian’s here!” Knox hollers up the stairs.

That’s odd. I haven’t really heard from him since dinner that night. I’m not really surprised. The whole thing was a huge cluster fuck.

I head downstairs and find Christian pacing back and forth in the hallway by the front door.

“What’s up?” I ask.

“We need to talk.”

I can’t tell if he’s angry, upset, or both. Regardless, he doesn’t look very happy to see me, which is odd considering I’ve barely talked to him lately.

“About?” I ask, leaning against the doorway to the kitchen.

“Noelle.”

My body stiffens at her name.

“What about Noelle?” I ask, trying to remain calm.

“She told me about the two of you.”

“What about us?”

“That you have a kid with her, Kane. Stop being a dickhead. Stop trying to beat around the bush. Why the fuck didn’t you call me as soon as you figured it out.”

I’m trying to tread lightly here. I can’t believe he’s angry with me when I’m the one that should be angry.

“Well, first of all, don’t you think I’ve had a lot on my mind since I found out? I literally just found out I have a son. How do you think I feel right now? I’m sorry but calling you was the last thing on my mind,” I grit out, pushing off the doorway and walking into the kitchen.

“I’m supposed to be your best friend,” he says, following me.

“Right. Well as my best friend, maybe you should take my feelings into consideration. I’m not the one dating Noelle, it wasn’t my story to tell.” I turn to face him, glaring.

“You’re right.” He puts his hands up in surrender. “I’m sorry. I’m just a little confused right now.”

“You’re not the only one.” I pull the chair out from the kitchen table, sitting down, motioning for him to join me.

“This is fucked up.” He sighs.

“Yes. Yes, it is,” I agree.

“Have you met your son yet?” he asks.

“No, but I’m guessing you have.” I grimace.

He looks at me but doesn’t say anything, giving me all the answers I need.

“I’m sorry, man,” he finally says, hanging his head.

“You don’t have anything to be sorry for. Neither one of us could have ever imagined this would happen.”

He nods in agreement, his eyes glued to his hands, avoiding eye contact with me. “She broke it off with me.”

I try not to think about how happy that makes me.

“Sorry,” I say lamely.

He shrugs nonchalantly. “I can’t blame her. You guys have a lot of shit to figure out. She’s not really going to have time to date me.”

“She won’t even talk to me,” I tell him, although I’m not sure why.

“She’ll come around,” he says, and it pisses me off that he knows her well enough to say something like that.

He notices my silence and takes it as a hint that he should leave. I’d never make him go, but I’m not going to stop him tonight.

I follow him to the front door before he turns around.

“Do you love her?”

His questions catches me off guard.
